Mochigase no Nagashibina (Nagashibina-kan) is a specialized museum located in 用瀬町 (Yose-cho), Tottori City, dedicated to the display of traditional Japanese Hina dolls. The building itself is a striking wooden structure that partially mimics the architectural style of the famous Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), offering a sense of traditional Japanese beauty from the moment you arrive. Built in 1986 as part of a domestic timber expansion project by the Forestry Agency, the facility serves as a center for preserving local heritage. Here, visitors can observe a wide variety of Hina dolls from across Japan alongside the local tradition of "Nagashibina."
The local area of the former 用瀬町 (Yose-cho) has long cherished the custom of "Nagashibina." This tradition involves floating dolls down the river during the Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival) season to symbolically wash away impurities and bad luck. This facility was established to pass this precious culture down to future generations and share it with the world. It is more than just a museum; it is a cultural landmark that symbolizes the spiritual traditions of the region.
The museum houses numerous exhibits that represent the pinnacle of Japanese doll culture. You can view various styles such as the imperial-style own-court dolls (Dairi-hina), Kyoto-style decorations, and unique regional variations like Tachihina or Yusoku-hina. The collection also includes highly detailed and precious items such as Kosa dolls and Ichimatsu dolls. As you move through the first and second floors, you will encounter the intricate craftsmanship and the deep historical context behind each piece.
The most spectacular time to visit is during the "Nagashibina" event, held around March 3rd (the lunar calendar date). During this time, the tradition of floating the dolls is performed on the nearby 千代川 (Chigawa River). Seeing this traditional ritual unfold within the natural landscape is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Because the exhibits and the atmosphere change with the seasons, you can enjoy a different facet of Japanese culture every time you visit.
Beyond the main exhibits, the 3rd floor features an observation deck where you can enjoy the surrounding scenery. The facility also includes a local products center where you can discover regional specialties. For a relaxing break, the onsite cafe/restaurant "Bonbori" offers a peaceful space to rest after your tour. It is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the aesthetic of Japanese tradition while enjoying a quiet moment.
Near the facility, you can find the 用瀬 (Yose) Library and the 用瀬町 (Yose-cho) Sports Park, allowing for a deeper connection with local life. The museum is highly accessible, located just a 3-minute walk from JR 用瀬 (Yose) Station on the Inbi Line, making it an easy destination for travelers using public transport.
As the facility is a wooden structure housing extremely delicate and precious artifacts, please be mindful not to touch any of the displays.
