Mizumoto Park is a large-scale metropolitan park located in Katsushika City, Tokyo. It is characterized as a 'waterfront park' centered around the Koai-dame reservoir, offering a beautiful landscape of water and lush greenery. The park is home to a diverse range of native and cultivated plants, providing a space where visitors can feel the rhythm of a natural ecosystem even within the urban-adjacent area. The history of this area is deeply connected to the river systems. Originally part of the old Furusato Riverbed, the current landscape is based on the 'Koai-dame' reservoir, which was managed by local residents to control water after the Furusato River was decommissioned during the Edo period under the direction of Tokugawa Iemitsu. Planning for the Mizumoto Green Space began around 1940, though development was interrupted by the war. Following the war, the area was developed according to urban planning standards, and the park officially opened on April 1, 1965. It has long been a site where nature conservation and urban development coexist harmoniously.
The park offers different charms depending on the season. It is particularly famous for its stunning views during the cherry blossom season and the iris blooming season. Key attractions include the Aquatic Plant Garden, which showcases various water-loving species, the expansive Great Lawn for relaxing, and the Adventure Playground for kids. With approximately 19,100 tall trees planted throughout the park, the environment is a dense, green sanctuary that integrates perfectly with the waterfront scenery.
The scenery changes significantly with the seasons. In spring, the cherry blossoms along the Ote-tsutsumi embankment are a sight to behold, while early summer brings the vibrant colors of the iris flowers. The area shares a unified waterfront landscape with Misato Park in Saitama, located across the Koai-dame reservoir. The western side of the park is bordered by the Sakura-tsutsumi embankment, creating a continuous natural corridor.
