Mizuhashi-bashi Matsuri is a traditional ritual held every July in the Mizuhashi area of Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture. The most distinctive feature of this festival is the 'Nagashi-bi' (floating fire) ceremony, which is rare to see elsewhere in Japan. The sight of lights drifting upon the river surface creates a mystical and ethereal landscape amidst the darkness of the night. As the festival reaches its climax, a spectacular display of fireworks illuminates the sky, allowing visitors to enjoy both the solemn atmosphere of a fire ritual and the high-energy excitement of a summer celebration.
The origins of this festival date back to the completion of a bridge over the Mizuhashi River in 1869 (the 2nd year of the Meiji era). It is said that the ritual began to celebrate the completion of the wooden bridge and to pray for the safety and tranquility of the river. Traditionally, cotton soaked in oil was placed on wooden boards (roofing material) to create 'Nagashi-bi' to be floated down the river. While the materials and methods have evolved over time, the fundamental spirit of 'floating the fire' remains a cherished tradition passed down through generations.
The highlight of the festival is the breathtaking combination of 'Nagashi-bi' and the fireworks display. Accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional flutes and drums (hayashi) played by local youths, dozens of small boats carry the lights down the river, creating a solemn and beautiful scene as the fire is sent toward the sea. The dynamic, colorful fireworks that fill the night sky are truly overwhelming. Watching the sparks of red, pink, gold, green, and white dance across the Mizuhashi sky is a unique experience that can only be found here.
The festival is held annually in July. The main events take place from evening through the night. A typical schedule includes the 'Urana no Mai' (dance dedication) around 19:00, the 'Eco Nagashi-bi' around 19:30, and the large-scale fireworks display starting around 20:00. Since this is a nighttime event, please be prepared for dark conditions. The most beautiful moment, when the light of the floating fires and the brilliance of the fireworks reach their peak, is after 20:00.
Spectators can observe the 'Nagashi-bi' from the riverbanks, watching the countless lights drift along the water's surface. You can feel the essence of primitive Japanese fire culture accompanied by the traditional sounds of musical instruments. Depending on the year, there may also be local stage performances or song presentations, allowing you to feel the vibrant energy of the local community.
