Mizubasho Park (Fureai Shizen no Sato) is a nature-rich park located southeast of Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture, nestled at the foot of Mt. Sugana. The park was opened in March 1996 to preserve and showcase the natural wetlands where Mizubasho (Skunk Cabbage) has grown wild for generations. Spanning 2.1 hectares, the area is home to approximately 30,000 Mizubasho plants. The sight of these white flowers emerging alongside the melting snow is a celebrated symbol of spring's arrival.
The area has long been a naturally preserved wetland where Mizubasho grows wild. To protect this landscape while allowing people to connect with nature, the area was developed as the "Fureai Shizen no Sato" (Nature Interaction Center) in 1996. It plays a vital role in preserving the local natural environment for future generations.
The defining feature of the park is the massive colony of Mizubasho. These perennials are characterized by large, striking white spathes (leaf-like bracts) that blanket the wetlands as the snow melts. In early April, the scenery becomes even more spectacular as mountain cherry blossoms (Yamazakura) bloom simultaneously, creating a beautiful color palette of white Mizubasho and pink cherry blossoms. A 480-meter wooden boardwalk allows visitors to observe the wetland plants up close without disturbing the ecosystem.
The best time to visit is from late March to early April. During this window, the white Mizubasho bloom in unison with the retreating snow. On clear spring days, the contrast between the white flowers and the bright blue sky is breathtaking. While the air can still be quite chilly during this season, the crisp, clean atmosphere makes for a refreshing experience.
The primary activity is a peaceful nature walk along the well-maintained wooden paths. Visitors can observe the intricate beauty of the Mizubasho—noting the tiny pale green flowers nestled within the large white bracts—and enjoy a quiet moment of reflection amidst the changing seasons.
Located at the base of Mt. Sugana, the park is surrounded by lush, natural landscapes. There are various other sightseeing spots and nature-based facilities throughout Gosen City that offer seasonal experiences.
There are no fees for park entry or parking (Free of charge).

As this is the snowmelt season (March–April), temperatures can be low and winds can be cold. We recommend wearing warm layers and comfortable walking shoes. Since you will be walking on a wooden boardwalk, please be mindful of your footing.
Photography of the scenery is permitted, but please follow etiquette and do not touch or damage the plants.
The park features a wooden boardwalk, but because it is a natural wetland environment, there may be slight unevenness or vibrations.
The parking area is designed for standard passenger vehicles. It may be difficult for medium or large vehicles to enter, turn around, or maneuver.
