The Chapel on the Water is a breathtaking architectural masterpiece located within Hoshino Resorts Tomamu in Shimukappu, Hokkaido. Designed by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, the chapel is built upon the concept of "framing" nature. Surrounded by a lush birch forest, the site is defined by a massive L-shaped concrete wall that separates the visitor from the outside world, creating a sanctuary of stillness. As you step inside, the elements of water, light, wind, and greenery become part of the architecture itself, offering a deeply immersive and spiritual experience.
This structure is recognized as a significant work in modern Japanese architecture, having received the 31st BCS Prize in 1990. Following Ando's philosophy of creating spaces that capture nature through human intention, the chapel is designed to facilitate a dialogue between the visitor and the natural world. Beyond its function as a wedding venue, its striking aesthetic and profound atmosphere have made it a cultural landmark, even serving as a filming location for international music videos.
The most striking feature is the chapel's structure. The space is surrounded by glass, allowing the surrounding landscape to be directly reflected within the sanctuary. At the altar, a shallow pool of water (approximately 15cm deep) holds a floating cross, which shimmers beautifully as light and wind move across the surface. Additionally, four concrete crosses on the roof allow sunlight to pour through top-lights, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. The architectural journey—from the approach through the walls to the sudden opening of the view inside—is a highlight in itself.
The chapel reveals a different face depending on when you visit. The morning is highly recommended for a "Morning Walk" experience, where you can feel the crisp air and hear the birdsong. In the evening, the atmosphere becomes mystical as candlelight reflects off the water's surface. The summer season is particularly beautiful when the birch forest is in full green bloom, but the chapel also offers a serene, contemplative atmosphere on rainy days when the sound of raindrops hitting the water enhances the silence.
Visitors can experience the beauty of the architecture through specific programs. The "Morning Chapel Visit" allows you to spend a quiet moment bathed in natural light. In the evenings, special candlelit settings create a magical atmosphere of light and shadow. These experiences are designed to make you feel like a part of nature rather than just an observer.
