Miyazawa Kenji Fairy Tale Village is an experiential "learning through play" facility themed around the works of Kenji Miyazawa, one of Iwate Prefecture's most iconic poets and children's authors. Rather than a standard museum, it is a sprawling landscape of imagination. The site is divided into various areas such as the Galaxy Station, Galaxy Station Plaza, Fairy Path, and Sky Plaza, all designed to bring his fantastical visions to life. The centerpiece, "Kenji's School," features five distinct zones—the Fantastical Hall, Space, Sky, Earth, and Water—each offering immersive displays. Additionally, the log-cabin style "Kenji's Classroom" provides a cozy, intimate space where literature and nature blend seamlessly.
Kenji Miyazawa was born in 1866 in what is now Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. As a poet, writer, and teacher, his works are deeply rooted in his profound observations of nature and the cosmos. This village was established to embody the characters and settings of his stories, aiming to deepen visitors' understanding of nature and life through literature. Every exhibit and spatial design is carefully crafted to reflect the literary nuances of his work, allowing visitors to experience his worldview from multiple perspectives.
The facility offers numerous enchanting areas to explore. At the main "Kenji's School," you can experience the five thematic zones centered on natural elements like space, earth, and water. The log-cabin "Kenji's Classroom" is another essential stop for literature lovers. In the outdoor areas, the Galaxy Station, Fairy Path, and Sky Plaza allow you to experience the stories through all five senses while surrounded by rich greenery. Walking through these paths feels like stepping directly into the pages of a storybook.
The atmosphere of the village changes beautifully with the seasons. A highlight is the "Fairy Tale Village Forest Light-up" event held from late July to late October. The illuminated forest creates a truly mystical and dreamlike atmosphere after dark. During the summer months (July–September), the lush greenery is at its peak, making it an ideal time for a scenic stroll. The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, allowing you to enjoy the interplay of natural light and the themed displays during the day.
