Miyama Town (Miyama Kayabuki no Sato), located in Nantan City, Kyoto, is a mountain village where many rare thatched-roof houses still stand today. This area is officially designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, preserving the traditional Japanese way of life and beautiful landscapes. Surrounded by mountains, the sight of continuous thatched-roof houses offers visitors a profound sense of Japan's original, untouched scenery.
Historically, this village developed as a mountain community centered around the forestry industry. To maintain its unique identity, significant efforts are made to preserve the traditional architectural styles. While roof re-thatching was once a community-wide task, today, organizations such as the "Kayabuki no Sato Preservation Society" and "Kayabuki no Sato Co., Ltd." systematically manage the preservation of the historical landscape and the operation of tourist facilities. Furthermore, a sophisticated management system is in place to protect these precious cultural assets, including the deployment of water cannons at each main residence to prevent fire damage.
