Misen is a 535-meter peak located in the center of Miyajima (Itsukukijima), Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Long revered as a sacred site, it serves as the majestic backdrop to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Itsukushima Shrine. At the summit, the Miyajima Misen Observatory offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the Seto Inland Sea and its many islands. The beauty of this landscape is so profound that Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first Prime Minister, once praised it by saying, "The true value of one of Japan's three most scenic views lies in the view from the summit."
The history of Misen is ancient, believed to have been established as a sacred site by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) in 806 AD. Since then, it has served as a center for Shugendo (asceticism) and Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, attracting countless pilgrims. The summit area is dotted with historic structures, including the Onoyama Shrine. Throughout the mountain, visitors can find massive rock formations that have been worshipped as 'Iwakura' (sacred dwelling places for deities) since ancient times. There are two main ways to reach the summit: hiking or using the Miyajima Ropeway. For hikers, several routes are available, such as the Momijidani course or the Daisho-in course, allowing you to choose based on your fitness level. If you use the Miyarjima Ropeway, you can easily reach the Shishiiwa Station area near the summit, from which you can explore the various shrines and observation decks. Whether it is a vigorous hike through nature or a peaceful stroll through historic temples, Misen offers a profound connection to the landscape.
At the foot of Mount Misen, you will find the World Heritage Itsukushima Shrine and the historic Daisho-in Temple. The nearby Momijidani Park also offers beautiful walks through rich natural scenery. When hiking or exploring, wear comfortable walking shoes (such as trekking shoes) and practical clothing. Since temperatures can change rapidly near the summit, it is highly recommended to bring a light jacket.
