Miyajima Aquarium is a marine-themed attraction located on Miyajima Island in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Its prime location near the World Heritage site, Itsukushima Shrine, makes it an easy and convenient stop during your sightseeing tour. The exhibits focus on the natural beauty of the Seto Inland Sea, showcasing more than 15,000 specimens across 380 different species. It is an ideal destination for families, couples, and groups of friends to observe the fascinating lifestyles of marine creatures up close.
Miyajima has been known as a sacred island since ancient times. To ensure the facility blends seamlessly with its surroundings, the architecture of Miyajima Aquarium incorporates traditional Japanese design elements. Situated within the Seto Inland Sea National Park, the aquarium also serves an important role in educating visitors about the local natural environment. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated to communicate the unique natural characteristics and biodiversity of the Seto Inland Sea region.
The main building is divided into 10 distinct zones that introduce the mysterious world of the Seto Inland Sea. A highlight is the "Miyajima Tidal Flat" zone, which recreates the environment around the Great Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Here, you can observe the precious ecosystem created by the dramatic tidal changes characteristic of this area. The marine mammal area features adorable animals such as penguins, sea lions, seals, and Asian small-clawed otters. Additionally, the live pool hosts daily events like the energetic sea lion shows, which are a must-see for all visitors.
The aquarium is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM). During the bright daylight hours, we recommend viewing the tanks that reflect the beautiful colors of the Seto Inland Sea. In the late afternoon, you can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere watching the rhythmic movements of the sea creatures to end your day. Please note that the facility will be closed for maintenance from December 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. We highly recommend checking the latest schedule before your visit.
Miyajima Aquarium offers much more than just static displays; it provides dynamic opportunities to see animals in action. The sea lion show is particularly popular and draws large crowds. Other engaging programs include penguin feeding times, needlefish feeding, and otter feeding sessions. These activities allow visitors to feel a closer connection to the daily lives and natural behaviors of these marine animals.
The aquarium is located very close to the famous Its-kushima Shrine. A common and highly recommended sightseeing route is to visit the shrine first and then walk to the aquarium, which is within easy walking distance. The surrounding area is also filled with charming cafes and shops where you can enjoy the peaceful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea and the unique atmosphere of Miyajima island.
