Miyagi Zao Fox Village is a private wildlife park located at an altitude of approximately 590m at the foot of the Zao mountain range in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. The park is home to about 250 foxes, including six different species such as the Ezo Red Fox, Silver Fox, and Arctic Fox. The most striking feature is the large, enclosed forest area where over 100 foxes roam freely, allowing you to observe them in a setting that closely mimics their natural habitat.
The park's origins trace back to the local dairy farming industry. As the domestic fur industry declined, the owners transitioned to a new form of 'tourism exhibition,' providing a home for foxes and creating a unique way to appreciate their beauty. Since opening in its current form in 1990, the park has focused on the research and breeding of foxes. Today, all foxes are captive-bred and undergo regular health-care routines, including deworming and facility disinfection, to ensure a safe environment for both the animals and visitors by managing risks like echinococcus.
Watch foxes engage in natural behaviors like digging and lounging in the sun within their free-roaming habitat. For a more direct experience, there are indoor areas where you can observe the foxes closely. Depending on the season, such as around Golden Week, there may even be opportunities to interact with adorable fox cubs. Beyond foxes, the park also houses other animals like rabbits, goats, and ponies, offering a diverse range of animal encounters.
The appearance of the foxes changes dramatically with the seasons. While they have sleeker coats in the summer, they develop incredibly thick, voluminous, and 'fluffy' coats during the winter. This 'mofu-mofu' look is highly popular on social media and is a major draw for visitors. While foxes can be more active during the day, they are naturally crepuscular, so activity levels may vary. The park remains open year-round, though access may be affected by heavy snow in winter (December to March).
The main attraction is the close-up observation of fox ecology. You can watch them play and rest in the open forest area. Special seasonal events, such as holding fox cubs, provide a rare chance for intimate interaction. The grounds also feature a small shrine, reflecting the local cultural heritage, making it a wonderful spot for both wildlife photography and cultural-themed strolls.
The area around the park is rich with Shiroishi City's local culture. Nearby attractions include Mt. Fubo, the traditional 'Yajiro Kokeshi Village' for local crafts, and the Miyagi Zao Shiroishi area. These locations make it easy to plan a scenic sightseeing route through the nature and culture of southern Miyagi.
