Miyagase Dam is a massive 156-meter high gravity concrete dam located on the Nakatsu River within the Sagami River system in Kanagawa Prefecture. Completed in 2000, it serves as a vital water source for the region and a major natural park for the Tokyo metropolitan area. The dam creates the stunning Miyagase Lake, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Thanks to its excellent accessibility—roughly 50km from central Tokyo and 40km from Yokohama or Kawasaki—it is a popular destination for weekend excursions.
The dam project was announced in 1971. Originally planned as the "Nakatsu River Dam," it was renamed "Miyagase Dam" as the project expanded in scale. The construction involved long-term negotiations regarding land compensation to protect local livelihoods and ensure the smooth transition of the community. With a total project cost of approximately 397 billion yen, it stands as one of Japan's most significant dam-building achievements. In 2005, it was selected as one of the "Top 100 Dam Lakes," highlighting its role in preserving local history and natural environments while securing essential water resources.
One of the most spectacular features of Miyagase Dam is the periodic "Sightseeing Water Release." Water pours through two gates at a height of approximately 100 meters, with a volume of 30 cubic meters per second. Watching the water surge and the resulting mist creates a truly powerful spectacle. Another popular attraction is the "Incline," a cable car that connects the top and bottom of the dam, offering a thrilling ride at a maximum gradient of 35 degrees. For a more serene experience, you can enjoy a cruise on the pleasure boat "Miya-maru" to observe the lake's scenery from the water.
Miyagase Dam offers different charms throughout the year. From spring to autumn, it is an ideal spot for picnics and outdoor leisure. If you plan to visit between April and November, be sure to check the schedule for the sightseeing water releases, which typically occur on Wednesdays, the 2nd and 4th Fridays, and the 2nd Sundays of the month. These releases take place twice a day at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, lasting about 4 to 6 minutes each. In December, the lakeside is beautifully decorated with Christmas trees, adding a festive touch to the season.
There are various ways to explore the area. The Incline ride offers a 4-minute journey with a panoramic view of the dam. You can also ride the "Ai-chan Go," an Italian-made road train that shuttles between the Aikawa Park Center and the base of the dam, allowing you to enjoy the scenery comfortably. For water lovers, the pleasure boats provide a unique way to experience the lake's natural beauty from a different perspective.
Directly below the dam lies "Kanagawa Prefectural Aikawa Park," a well-maintained area perfect for picnics and recreation. The lakeside also features the "Miyagase Mizu-no-Sato" and a visitor center for nature study and rest. The surrounding area is rich in leisure facilities, including various campsites and international trout fishing spots, making it a complete destination for nature enthusiasts.
Since the area is surrounded by nature, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring. If you plan to use the incline or pleasure boats, please bring light clothing or rain gear depending on the weather.
