Mitsuike Park, located in Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a comprehensive park where nature and culture seamlessly blend. The park features three distinct ponds—Upper, Middle, and Lower—which historically served as agricultural reservoirs dating back to the Edo period (1787). The park is renowned for its spectacular cherry blossom displays, with over 1,000 trees across 35 varieties, earning it a spot on the 'Japan Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots' list. It is also recognized as one of the 'Top 50 Bird Watching Sites in Kanagawa,' making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
The history of the area is deeply rooted in the Edo period's agricultural development. Within the park, you can find the 'Fujiwara Masatake Monument,' erected in 1843, which is preserved as a registered cultural property of Yokohama. The area also holds archaeological significance with the 'Mitsuike Kofun' (ancient burial mound) located on the hills. Furthermore, in 1990, the 'Korea Garden' was established to commemorate the friendship between Kanagawa Prefecture and Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Designed based on Feng Shui and Yin-Yang philosophy, this garden offers a unique cultural experience of traditional Korean aesthetics and philosophy, distinct from typical Japanese landscapes.
The greatest appeal of the park is its seasonal beauty. In spring, the landscape is dominated by the breathtaking sight of thousands of cherry blossoms, particularly the Somei Yoshino variety, surrounding the ponds. In the Korea Garden, visitors can observe architecture inspired by the Joseon Dynasty's Yangban (aristocrat) style and the 'Hoji Ento' (square pond with a circular island), which symbolizes the harmony of Earth (square) and Heaven (circle) to wish for prosperity. The park also features a unique coexistence of nature and modern infrastructure, with broadcasting towers for TV Kanagawa and interfm located on site.
Spring (March to April) is the most popular time to visit, offering an unforgettable view of cherry blossoms reflecting on the water's surface. The park is situated in a residential and industrial area of Tsurumi Ward, Yokohama. Due to its large scale, ample parking is available for visitors traveling by car. There are also park centers and small shops within the grounds where you can take a break or enjoy light refreshments. The area is also home to local infrastructure, including broadcasting facilities related to TV Kanagawa.
Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are highly recommended, especially when navigating the paths around the ponds or unpaved areas.
