Mito Castle Ruins, located in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is a site steeped in history. Originally held by the Baba and Edo clans, it became the residence of Tokugawa Yorifusa in 1609, marking the beginning of the Mito Tokugawa era. Today, visitors can witness the grandeur of the reconstructed Otemon Gate and the Ninomaru Corner Turret, as well as the rare, original Yakuimon Gate. The vast grounds, featuring preserved earthen walls and moats, serve as a powerful symbol of Mito's historical identity.
The site's origins date back to a residence from the late Heian to early Kamakura periods, but it was significantly developed by Tokugawa Yorifusa. He expanded the Sanmaru area and outer moats, and constructed the palace in the Ninomaru area. A large turret known as the
