Guide
Mitarai Valley is a breathtaking natural gorge located in the northern part of Tenkawa Village, Nara Prefecture. It is a tributary of the Yamauchi River, which originates from the Omine mountain range. The valley is characterized by its diverse waterfalls, massive rock formations, and incredibly clear water that remains transparent even at the bottom. A well-maintained trail stretches approximately 8km, allowing visitors to experience the dynamic scenery while walking through the heart of nature. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, offering vibrant fresh greenery in spring and summer, and brilliant autumn colors in the fall.
The valley holds deep connections to the history of the Southern Court of Japan. One legend regarding its name suggests that members of the Southern Court performed 'Misogi' (ritual purification) in these waters. Another legend tells of the 'Light Waterfall,' where light was said to shine through the falls toward Prince Koryo. These legends, along with nearby historical sites like the Daisho Daigongen Shrine, add a layer of spiritual and historical depth to the natural beauty of the area.

There are several iconic spots within the valley. One of the most famous is the Aiden Bridge, a suspension bridge that offers a spectacular view of the emerald-green pools and the 'Mitarai Falls' below. Another must-see is the 'Light Waterfall,' named for the way sunlight pierces through the cascading water, and the 'Large Katsura Tree,' known for its complex and beautiful shape. Because the trail has an elevation change of about 200m, the scenery changes significantly depending on which route you take.
Mitarai Valley offers a different face to visitors throughout the year. From spring to summer, the fresh greenery is lush and the water's transparency is at its peak. In autumn, the surrounding foliage turns into a vibrant tapestry of colors. While the nature trails are generally open year-round, it is best to visit during daylight hours to fully enjoy the changing scenery and light effects.

The primary activity is hiking and nature walks along the maintained paths. You can start from the Tenkawa Village Information Center and walk toward the Dorogawa Onsen area, or vice versa. After your hike, a perfect way to refresh is to visit facilities like the Dorogawa Onsen Visitor Center to enjoy a relaxing soak in a hot spring.
The area around the valley features several useful facilities for travelers. The Tenkawa Village Information Center and the Dorogawa Onsen Visitor Center serve as excellent starting points or rest stops for hikers. Additionally, the nearby Daisho Daigongen Shrine and the famous Dorogawa Onsen hot spring district allow you to combine nature walks with cultural and wellness experiences.

When exploring the valley, please prepare for a physical hike. Due to the elevation changes and uneven terrain, sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothing are highly recommended.
