Mitaki-dera is a historic temple located in Nishi-ku, Hiroshima City. As its name suggests, the temple grounds are characterized by three distinct waterfalls flowing amidst lush, abundant nature. Known as Mitaki Kannon, it is a beloved spiritual retreat for the local community. The temple is particularly famous during the autumn season, when the surrounding trees transform into a sea of brilliant colors, attracting many visitors to witness one of Hiroshima's most iconic autumn foliage spots.
The temple's origins are said to be linked to the legendary Buddhist monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi). The grounds feature several wooden structures dating from the late Edo period to the early Meiji era, reflecting a deep sense of history. The temple also holds a significant place in modern history; located approximately 3.18 km to 3.30 km from the hypocenter during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, it suffered damage from the intense blast. While the main hall's roof and fittings were damaged, the structure was rebuilt in 1968. The temple preserves precious cultural assets, including the Tahoto Pagoda (a Prefectural Important Cultural Property) and a wooden statue of Amida Nyorai (a National Important Cultural Property).

The greatest attraction is the three waterfalls that give the temple its name. The sight of these different water flows creates a soothing atmosphere that provides deep relaxation to all who visit. Other notable features include the vermilion-colored Tahoto Pagoda, the historic bell tower, the Inari Shrine, the Sankiko Genendo, and the Chinju-do, each possessing its own unique charm. Many of these structures are registered on the Hiroshima City list of buildings affected by the atomic bomb, serving as important historical witnesses. Additionally, the "Bodai-no-Niwa" garden is renowned for its beautiful landscape that harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding nature.
We highly recommend visiting during the autumn foliage season. The sight of the surrounding mountains turning shades of red and gold is truly spectacular. Because you can feel the changing seasons through the sound of the waterfalls, visiting during the season of fresh greenery or early in the morning when the air is still and quiet is also a wonderful experience. You can enjoy a different side of nature's beauty throughout the year.

The main experience at Mitaki-dera is a peaceful stroll through nature. Walking the paths while listening to the rhythmic sound of the waterfalls and observing the historic architecture allows you to forget daily stresses and find mental clarity. Some specialized tours may also offer programs to guide visitors through the historical sites. It is a perfect place to feel the energy of nature and find a moment of spiritual peace.
Mitaki-dera is nestled in a mountainous area rich in natural beauty. The surrounding area features various historical sites and scenic paths for walking, and it is easily accessible from central Hiroshima. You can enjoy a journey that combines the exploration of Hiroshima's history and culture with the tranquility of the natural environment.
As some parts of the approach are narrow and uneven, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is also wise to bring weather-appropriate gear, such as a light jacket or a compact umbrella. As this is a sacred temple, please observe proper etiquette and maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor. Please note that cash is required for certain expenses or donations; carrying small change or yen will ensure a smooth visit.
