Mitake no Kagamiiwa is a Specially Designated Natural Monument located in Kamikawa Town, Saitama Prefecture. The most striking feature of this rock is its incredibly smooth and polished surface, which reflects the surrounding scenery like a mirror, giving it its name. The rock is composed of reddish-brown ferromagnesian quartz schist. Historically, the way the rock surface shimmers under the moonlight has made it the setting for numerous legends and folk tales. It is a rare site that combines exquisite natural craftsmanship with deep historical significance.
The rock is steeped in various ancient legends. One tale tells of a mountain castle that once stood in this area; to prevent enemies from targeting the castle when the rock glowed under the moonlight, locals supposedly used torch smoke to dull the surface. Another legend relates to the fall of Takasaki Castle, where people devised ways to ensure the rock would not reflect the flames of war.
In the late Edo period, the rock was described in the 'Yureki Zaki' as the 'Mirror of Bright Reflection' (Sugatami no Meikyo), capable of even reflecting the wrinkles on a person's face. Similar descriptions appear in the 'Koshiya Monogatari.' There are even spiritual traditions suggesting the rock's 'expression' changes based on one's state of mind, deeply rooting it in local faith and culture. Geologically, it is an academically significant 'fault mirror' located directly on the Hachioji Tectonic Line.
The main attraction is the rock's surface, which possesses a luster so high it faintly reflects the surrounding trees and even human figures. The deep reddish-brown color and the polished, smooth texture offer a breathtaking display of natural wonder. To protect the site, a fence has been installed around the rock; while you cannot touch the surface directly, you can observe its texture and brilliance from a very close distance. Understanding its geological origins will deepen your appreciation of the view.
You can visit during any season, but the rock's appearance changes dramatically depending on the light. The surface's mirror-like quality is most prominent at night under the moonlight or during specific times of the day when sunlight hits it at a particular angle.
