Mishima-san no Shibazakura is a renowned spot for viewing moss phlox (shibazakura) located in Kutchan, Abuta District, Hokkaido. This beautiful garden was meticulously cultivated by Mr. Kazuo Mishima, a local resident who has nurtured every single plant from the seedling stage. As the pink and white moss phlox spread across the ground, they create a colorful carpet that contrasts beautifully with the snow-capped peak of the majestic Mount Yotei (also known as Ezo Fuji). It is a cherished local landmark that marks the arrival of spring.
This garden is maintained as a private estate, which adds a layer of intimacy and passion to the landscape. The current breathtaking view is the result of years of dedicated labor by Mr. Mishima, who has nurtured each plant with great care. Rather than just a natural landscape, the garden represents a cultural landscape shaped by individual passion and a deep love for the land, making it a beloved part of the local community's identity.

The greatest highlight is the undulating gradient of colors created by the moss phlox. The pink and white blooms unfold like a soft, textured carpet across the terrain as the seasons change. Additionally, the expansive view offers a stunning contrast between the colorful floral ground and the grand, white-peaked silhouette of Mount Yotei, providing a perfect photo opportunity.
The peak blooming season is typically around late May. Visiting during this specific window ensures you witness the most vibrant and dense floral displays. Because the landscape changes rapidly with the weather, it is highly recommended to check the latest blooming status before your visit. For the best views, visit during the daytime when the bright sunlight clearly highlights the colors of the flowers and the details of Mount Yota's peak.
The primary experience here is the tranquil appreciation of nature. Visitors can enjoy the serene beauty of the flower fields and the natural artistry of the landscape. As this is a private garden, the atmosphere is one of quiet contemplation. We ask that you enjoy the scenery peacefully and respectfully.
The area surrounding the garden offers spectacular views of Mount Yotei. Furthermore, Kutchan Town features various amenities, such as 'Michi-no-Eki Iwanai' (roadside stations), which are great places to explore local food and products. It is an ideal area to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Hokkaido.
As this is a private garden, strict adherence to etiquette is required. Please do not step onto the garden beds or cause any damage to the plants.
