Misato Shibazakura Park is a vast, scenic park located adjacent to the Koai-tai reservoir in Misato City, Saitama Prefecture. The park's true splendor arrives in spring, when approximately 260,000 moss phlox (shibazakura) plants bloom across 2.9 hectares. The striking arrangement of red, white, and pink flowers creates swirling patterns and waves, inspired by the legendary 'Orihime's Celestial Robe,' offering a colorful and mesmerizing landscape. It is a premier destination for witnessing the changing seasons through nature.
The region has a long history of coexistence with the natural waters of the area. The landscape design of the park reflects traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, where the strategic planting of moss phlox creates patterns that express the ephemeral beauty of Japan's four seasons. The park has been developed to allow citizens and tourists to connect with nature through areas such as the Nature Observation Garden and the Iris Field, preserving the local ecosystem while providing recreational space.
The park features several distinct areas for enjoying diverse natural scenery. The most famous sight is the massive 'carpet' of moss phlox that covers the vast grounds. Along the edges of the Koai-tai reservoir, you can explore the Nature Observation Garden and the Iris Field to observe aquatic plants and local wildlife. For a panoramic view, visitors can use the observation deck to look down upon the entire park and the seasonal floral arrangements. The park also features well-maintained paths perfect for jogging and walking, allowing visitors to enjoy both exercise and scenery.
The peak viewing season is from early April to early May, coinciding with the cherry blossom season. During this time, you can witness a stunning harmony between the pink cherry blossoms (such as Somei Yoshino and Yaezakura) and the colorful moss phlox. While the colors are most vivid under the bright daytime sun, the scenery becomes particularly magical in the evening, as the sunset reflects beautifully over the Koai-tai reservoir. The Flower Garden also offers different botanical displays depending on the season.
Visitors can enjoy various forms of relaxation and recreation. The BBQ area (68 plots available) allows for dining surrounded by nature, and the area is equipped with solar-powered lighting for safety. Activities include jogging, walking, nature observation, and enjoying the view from the water terrace. During the annual 'Misato Shibazura Festival' in spring, the park becomes even more lively with local food stalls, regional agricultural products, and food trucks, offering a taste of local culture.
The park is bordered by the scenic Koai-tai reservoir, providing a beautiful waterfront atmosphere. The nearby Mizumoto Park offers a continuous stretch of lush greenery. The area is easily accessible from major transport hubs like Misato Station and Misato-Chuo Station (Tsukuba Express), making it a part of a larger natural-urban-harmony-themed travel route in the region.
Since the park is quite large, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to use the BBQ area, please bring your own cooking tools and food. When admiring the moss phlox, please stay on the designated paths to avoid damaging the delicate plants. Note: There have been reports of certain spider species (such as the redback spider) in the grass; please be cautious when walking near bushes or sitting near unmaintained areas.
