Minami Shrine is the most prestigious shrine in the Hida region, located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Dedicated to the deity Mitoshi no Okami, it has been a center of deep devotion for the people of Hida for centuries. The shrine grounds are home to significant cultural assets, such as the Inakui Shinba (sacred horse) attributed to the legendary artist Saicho Jiro, making it a vital site for understanding the local history and heritage.
While the exact date of its founding is unknown, the shrine has stood as the premier shrine of Hida Province throughout history. Once referred to as 'Minami Daibosatsu,' it has long served as a spiritual pillar for the community. The shrine grounds feature several significant historical structures and cultural assets. A standout attraction is the Inakui Shinba, a sacred horse sculpture attributed to the famous artist Saicho Jiro, which is beloved by locals due to its accompanying legends. Another important structure is the Ema-den (votive tablet hall), a designated cultural property of Takayama. Additionally, the 'Great Sugi' (Giant Cedar tree), a natural monument of Gifu Prefecture, adds a sense of natural grandeur to the sacred landscape.
Minami Shrine hosts various festivals throughout the year. A major highlight is the Annual Festival (Miya Matsuri) held on May 1st and 2nd, where traditional performing arts such as Togakura (cockfighting dance), Jindai-odori, and Shishi-mai (lion dance) are dedicated to the deities. Furthermore, from October 1st to November 30th, the shrine accepts requests for Shichi-Go-San prayers, a traditional rite to celebrate the healthy growth of children. Visiting during these seasonal festivals allows travelers to witness authentic Japanese traditions in action.
