Located in the Shimokamo Onsen area of Minami-Izu, "Minami no Sakura" is a unique destination characterized by early-blooming cherry blossoms and sprawling fields of yellow rapeseed flowers that reach their peak in February. The landscape offers a breathtaking color contrast: the soft pink of the cherry blossoms dancing against the bright yellow of the rapeseed flowers along the A0no River. Adding to this charm, the white steam rising from nearby hot spring (onsen) facilities creates a mystical atmosphere, blending the warmth of the springs with the fresh arrival of spring.
This region is part of a traditional hot spring district centered around Shimokamo Onsen, a place where nature and hot spring culture have coexisted for centuries. Leveraging the unique characteristic of cherry blossoms blooming as early as February, the area hosts cultural events such as the "Minami no Sakura and Nanohana Festival." This makes the scenery a symbolic representation of the early arrival of spring in the local culture.

The greatest draw is the line of early-blooming cherry blossoms along the Aono River. While most cherry blossom seasons occur in late March or April, these blossoms paint the riverbanks in pink as early as February. Beneath the trees, a vibrant yellow carpet of rapeseed flowers spreads out, providing a stunning visual spectacle. The sight of the natural colors blending with the rising steam from the nearby onsen makes this a truly one-of-a-kind landscape.
The best time to visit is February. During this month, the "Minami no Sakura and Nanohana Festival" is held, bringing a lively atmosphere with various food stalls and local vendors. Many events are scheduled on weekends, offering a bustling and festive environment. For the best photography, visit during the bright daylight hours when the pink of the blossoms, the yellow of the flowers, and the blue of the sky are most vivid.

During the seasonal festival period, you can enjoy strolling through the colorful landscape while exploring the local food stalls. The primary way to enjoy the area is through a leisurely walk along the river, soaking in the vibrant colors of the flowers. Because these are early-blooming varieties, you can experience the sensation of spring much earlier than in most other parts of Japan.
The area is dotted with various Shimokamo Onsen facilities. It is common for visitors to combine a trip here with visits to nearby roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) or local hot spring resorts. Surrounded by the rich natural environment of Minami-Izu, it is highly recommended to explore this area as part of a larger scenic tour of the southern Izu Peninsula.

While February brings a sense of spring, the temperature can be quite chilly, especially in the mornings, evenings, or near the riverbank. We recommend bringing a warm jacket or a scarf for extra comfort. Please wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for strolling along the riverbank. As there are often small stalls during events, please ensure you carry enough cash (Japanese Yen) for purchases. For parking, please use the "Michi-no-Eki Shimokamo Onsen Yunohana" area.
