Guide
Minami Awa Sunline is a scenic coastal road that connects Minami Town and Mugi Town in Tokushima Prefecture. The route winds through an undulating landscape overlooking the Pacific Ocean, tracing the path of the powerful Kuroshio Current. Along the route, there are four designated lookout parking areas where travelers can stop to soak in the vast, blue scenery of the Pacific. This area is also highly regarded by local fishing enthusiasts.
The road is officially known as Tokushima Prefectural Road No. 147 (Hiwasa-Mugi Line). While it once operated as a toll road, it was made free to the public on April 1, 1988. Today, it serves as a premier scenic route for travelers looking to experience the natural beauty of the coastline.

The most striking feature of Minami Awa Sunline is its rhythmic, undulating route that follows the coastline. The four lookout points provide perfect vantage points for photography and relaxation. Near the Senba Kaigai cliffs, the landscape is particularly dramatic, with sheer cliffs rising nearly 200 meters high over a distance of 2 kilometers. Additionally, the area is known for its exceptionally clear air, making it an ideal location for stargazing and astronomical observation under a dark sky.
The road is accessible year-round. However, please be aware of specific vehicle restrictions: motorcycles with an engine displacement exceeding 125cc are prohibited from traveling on this road between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM. If you are touring on a large motorcycle, it is highly recommended to plan your ride during daylight hours. For those interested in stargazing, the clear night skies offer a spectacular experience during seasons with low humidity.
The primary activities here are scenic driving and motorcycle touring. The coastline also serves as a popular spot for fishing. Visitors can use the lookout parking areas to enjoy uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean or use the area as a base for observing the stars at night.
Near the starting point of the route, you can find JR Hiwasa Station and the Michi-no-Eki Hiwasa (Roadside Station). On the Mugi side, JR Mugi Station is available. These local facilities can serve as convenient hubs for your travel planning.
Please strictly observe the vehicle restrictions: motorcycles larger than 125cc are not allowed between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM. When using the lookout points, please park only in designated areas. If you plan to stay for stargazing, bring warm clothing to protect against the drop in temperature at night. While the road itself is free, please carry cash or a credit card for any nearby facilities or local shops you may visit.
