The route leading toward Kaiyodai is particularly famous for its dynamic landscape, characterized by long, straight stretches of road and gentle undulations that create the illusion of a path stretching endlessly toward the horizon. This road serves as a symbol of Hokkaido's vastness and is considered a "holy land" for many driving and motorcycle enthusiasts.
This region is a central hub for dairy farming, defined by its expansive pastures. The landscape of the Milk Road is more than just a transit route; it is a cultural vista deeply connected to the local dairy industry. Furthermore, the area features the "Nekusun Plateau Grid-patterned Windbreaks," a Hokkaido heritage site. This unique landscape was even captured in historical footage by astronauts, showcasing its distinctive appearance from space. The greatest charm of the Milk Road is the overwhelming sense of openness. As you drive toward Kaiyodai, the view of rolling green pastures stretches as far as the eye can see. At night, the area becomes a premier spot for stargazing, offering a breathtaking view of the Milky Way. On certain occasions, visitors may even witness the rare natural phenomenon known as a "square sun" (distorted sun), caused by light refraction due to differences in air and water temperature.
Daytime visits are best during seasons with high contrast between the blue sky and green fields. From early June to late October, you can enjoy the sight of cattle grazing in the vast pastures. At night, the lack of light pollution makes it an ideal time for observing the stars and the Milky Way. Additionally, the scenery changes dramatically during sunrise and sunset due to the shifting angles of light.

Near the Kaiyodai Farm Interaction Plaza (located to the west of the observatory), you can enjoy nature walks. For a taste of local culture, the cafe inside the observatory offers delicious treats like soft-serve ice cream made from locally produced milk.
Kaiyodai, one of the primary destinations via the Milk Road, features an observatory overlooking the surrounding landscape from a plateau 270m above sea level. The Kaiyodai Farm Interaction Plaza also offers walking paths through vast grasslands, allowing you to feel the environment up close. These are essential stops to make during your journey.
Weather in this area can change rapidly, and temperatures drop significantly at night; please bring warm clothing. As there is no public transportation, traveling by rental car or private vehicle is essential. When taking photos, please ensure you do so safely without obstructing traffic or interfering with farm operations.
