Mikurigaike Pond is one of Japan's most beautiful volcanic lakes, located in the Murodo-daira area (altitude 2,450m) of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in Toyama Prefecture. Formed approximately 10,000 years ago, the lake is about 630m in circumference and 15m deep. It is renowned as one of the most spectacular volcanic lakes in the Northern Alps. The crystal-clear blue surface acts as a mirror, reflecting the surrounding rugged mountain peaks, offering a sublime natural masterpiece that draws visitors from around the world.
The landscape of this region was shaped by intense volcanic activity, and Mikurigaike Pond is a vital part of that geological history. For many years, this area has served as a precious habitat for alpine plants and rare wildlife. In particular, the areas covered with creeping pine are a crucial habitat for the Rock Ptarmigan (Raicho), a Special Natural Monument of Japan. This area is deeply rooted in a culture of respect for nature and mountain worship, maintaining a landscape that has been nurtured within a harsh yet beautiful high-altitude environment.
The greatest charm of Mikurigaike Pond lies in its changing colors. In summer, the deep azure surface reflects the bright sunlight, while in autumn, the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of red and yellow, creating a stunning reflection on the water. A significant feature is the well-maintained, paved walking path that leads from the Murodo Terminal, making it relatively easy to access the lakeshore. There are also benches placed around the lake where you can sit and immerse yourself in the tranquil scenery.
Mikurigaike Pond presents a completely different face depending on the season. Because the area is often covered in deep snow until June, the best time to visit is from July to October when the snow melts. Summer (July–August) is perfect for seeing the lush greenery against the blue water, while Autumn (September–October) is the peak season for breathtaking fall foliage. During the autumn colors, the area can become crowded, but the view is truly worth it. For the clearest reflections of the mountain silhouettes, visit during the bright daylight hours.
While the main activity is a relaxing stroll along the well-maintained paths, observing alpine plants and wildlife is a highlight. If you are lucky, you might even spot the rare Rock Ptarmigan. Additionally, you can enjoy a relaxing break at the nearby Mikurigaike Onsen, where you can soak in waters with natural mineral properties while gazing at the view from the terrace. It is a perfect way to combine a nature walk with a soothing hot spring experience.
Murodo-daira is a key hub of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Near Mikurigaike, you will find various accommodation and rest facilities, making it a great base for both hikers and sightseers. Nearby, spots like Daikan-dake offer panoramic views, often accessible via ropeway. The area is also popular among serious mountaineers and campers, with nearby sites like the Raichozawa Campground available for those looking to explore the high mountains further.
