Mikonoyama Yamazakura is a collection of wild cherry blossoms designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument, located in the Mikon district of the Kyogami Peninsula in Wakasa Town, Fukui Prefecture. The blossoms cover a vast area of approximately 1 km east-to-west and 200 meters north-to-south. Known locally as "Senbonzakura" (Thousand Cherry Blossoms), the area is famous for its stunning scenery where the pink blossoms harmonize perfectly with the blue waters of Wakasa Bay.

History & Cultural Background

The history of these wild cherry blossoms dates back to around 1742 (the Kanpo era). Records suggest they were planted as boundary markers during land reclamation projects encouraged by the local government to establish oil palm (Korobi) fields. This makes the blossoms not just a natural wonder, but a significant cultural heritage that tells the story of the region's agricultural development.

The primary highlight is the sight of countless wild cherry blossoms blooming across the landscape. In spring, the fresh light green of the peninsula is transformed by a soft, pale pink hue.
