One of the most captivating aspects is the opportunity to witness the traditional Japanese coastal culture firsthand through live demonstrations by Ama (traditional female divers).
The island has played a pivotal role in the global development of the pearl industry. Thanks to the achievements of Kokichi Mikimoto, who dedicated his life to the advancement of cultured pearls, pearl culture spread across the globe. A statue of Kokichi Mikimoto is erected on the island, serving as a landmark of his legacy. More than just a tourist spot, this is a place of high cultural value where modern industrial development meets the ancient traditions of the Ama divers.
A major highlight is the live demonstration of Ama divers wearing traditional white 'isozoku' (sea-bathing attire). This performance recreates the traditional work of divers who once tended to Akoya oysters, offering a visual journey into Japan's traditional maritime way of life. Additionally, the island offers programs to deepen your knowledge of pearl manufacturing and displays of exquisite pearl crafts. Visitors can also enjoy the island's natural beauty while browsing the shopping area or enjoying local cuisine.
Please note that operating hours for Mikimoto Pearl Island may vary depending on the season and specific dates. For example, from December 24th to December 31st, the closing time is 17:00, and from January 1st to January 4th, it is 17:30. It is highly recommended to check the schedule before your visit. The sparkling beauty of the pearls paired with the seasonal ocean scenery makes for an unforgettable experience, especially during the Ama demonstrations.
Beyond viewing exhibits, you can enjoy shopping for pearl-related items and dining on fresh seafood. For a bit of fun, look for the 'Love-Love Stone'—a heart-shaped stone hidden near the sago palm plants by the statue of Kokichi Mikimoto. Mikimoto Pearl Island is a key destination in the Ise-Shima area. Nearby, you can visit the Toba Aquarium to learn more about marine life. The island is also easily accessible via the Ise Grand Shrine route, making it a perfect addition to a sightseeing tour of Ise, Toba, and Shima. The beautiful coastline makes this an ideal area for driving or coastal cruises.
As you will be walking around a coastal environment, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes. The facility is foreigner-friendly, providing multi-language-support through brochures in English, Korean, Chinese (Simplified/Traditional), German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. Please note that the viewing area for the Ama demonstrations may change during construction periods (such as from October 28, 2025, to approximately January 31).
