Located in Ochi Town, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, Mikari no Taki Falls is a renowned site selected as one of the 'Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan.' The landscape is characterized by a powerful white stream cascading down rocky cliffs, surrounded by lush greenery. The area becomes a major attraction during the 'Mikari no Taki Hydrangea Festival' held from early to late June. Visitors can enjoy the harmony of natural water formations and the vibrant colors of countless hydrangeas.
The name 'Mikari' implies a place so beautiful that one wants to 'turn back and look again.' This reflects the enduring charm that draws visitors back repeatedly. Today, the area is maintained as a scenic park where locals and tourists can connect with nature. Being selected as one of the Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan, it holds significant cultural value as a symbol of Japan's natural beauty.
The greatest draw is the spectacular sight of the waterfall paired with blooming hydrangeas. In June, approximately 40,000 flowers across 50 varieties—in shades of blue, pink, and purple—decorate the surroundings. Well-maintained walkways near the base of the falls allow you to feel the power of the water up close. On sunny days, you may even witness rainbows forming in the mist, creating a once-in-a-lifetime natural spectacle.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, deep greenery in summer, and autumn foliage in fall. The absolute best time to visit is during the June Hydrangea Festival. During this period, night illuminations are also held (typically from 7:20 PM to around 10:00 PM between May and September), offering a mystical and ethereal view of the falls.
Visitors can enjoy light hiking along the paths to feel the fresh air and the sound of rushing water. The area is perfect for photography; the bridges and walkways near the water's base offer excellent vantage points for capturing the powerful current. It is an ideal spot for nature observation and refreshing walks.
The falls are part of a scenic area in Karatsu City. You can easily include this stop in a larger sightseeing route through Saga. Nearby, you can discover local culinary delights, such as Karatsu's famous 'Ika Shumai' (squid dumplings), at various local shops and restaurants in the wider Karatsu area.
