Mihamaen is a quintessential Japanese garden situated within Makuhari Seaside Park in Mihama-ku, Chiba City. Opened on June 15, 1990, the garden is designed as a 'stroll garden' (kaiyu-shiki) centered around a large pond. The landscape is meticulously crafted to evoke the beauty of mountains, rivers, seas, and forests. A highlight of the garden is the 'Shoraitei' teahouse, a traditional Sukiya-style structure built with Kitayama Sugi (Japanese cedar). This allows visitors to appreciate the harmony between traditional Japanese architecture and the natural scenery.
The garden was developed as part of the urban planning for the Makuhari New Urban Center to provide a space where nature and culture could coexist within a modern city. Since its opening in 1990, it has served as a vital green space for the community. The Shoraitei teahouse showcases the refined Sukiya-style architecture, a technique that emphasizes elegance and simplicity. The garden also played a role in the regional environmental preservation efforts, particularly around the time of the 1995 National Urban Greening Fair held in the nearby Makuhari Seaside Park area.
The centerpiece of the garden is the expansive central pond, home to many large, vibrant koi fish. Watching the movement of the koi is a peaceful and meditative experience. The Shoraitei teahouse is another must-see, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese design and craftsmanship. As you walk along the garden paths, the landscape unfolds to reveal scenery that mimics natural topographies, providing a sense of tranquility and a deep connection to the environment.
Mihamaen is open throughout the year. Daytime visits are ideal for observing the koi fish and the intricate details of the teahouse architecture. The garden is open until 17:00, with the last entry at 16:30. If you wish to experience the tea service at the teahouse, please note that matcha service is available from 9:00 to 16:30. Be aware that the teahouse is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so please plan your visit accordingly.
Visitors can enjoy several traditional activities. You can purchase koi food for 100 JPY to feed the fish in the pond. For a more formal cultural experience, the Shoraitei teahouse offers a matcha and seasonal Japanese sweet set for 900 JPY per person. The teahouse features 24 seats, allowing you to enjoy your tea within a beautiful, traditional architectural setting. Please remember that the teahouse is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Mihamaen is located within Makuhari Seaside Park (Block C). The surrounding area is a major hub for events and sports, featuring large-scale facilities such as ZOZO Marine Stadium (Chiba Marine Stadium), the Takayanomiya Memorial JFA Dream Field, and Makuhari Messe. Because it is within walking distance of Kaihin-Makuhari Station, it is easily accessible from the nearby hotels and commercial districts of the Makuhari New Urban Center.
The garden paths are well-maintained and easy to walk, but we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that most payments, such as admission, koi food, and tea sets, require cash. The teahouse service is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and may change due to private bookings. The garden is a non-smoking area, and outside food or drink delivery is not permitted.
