Mifuneyama Rakuen is a magnificent garden spanning approximately 500,000 square meters at the western foot of Mt. Mifune in Takeo, Saga. Its landscape is renowned for a beauty reminiscent of Chinese landscape paintings. With the dramatic cliffs of Mt. Mifune as a backdrop, the garden displays a changing face of nature: vibrant cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, and brilliant autumn colors in the fall. This is one of Japan's most beautiful gardens, where natural splendor and traditional landscaping techniques blend seamlessly.
The garden's history dates back to the construction of a villa by Nabeshima Shigeyoshi, the 28th lord of the Takeo domain, who spent approximately three years developing the grounds. Due to its unique shape, Mt. Mifune has long been called 'Tosenzan.' Today, the site is a registered national monument, preserving a cultural landscape that harmonizes with nature. It is a space where centuries-old landscaping techniques and natural beauty coexist.
The greatest draw is the dynamic view framed by the Mt. Mifune cliffs. In spring, 2,000 cherry trees and 200,000 wayazaleas create a sea of color. In autumn, the foliage—including a famous maple tree over 170 years old—vibrantly colors the ponds and mountain slopes. Famous spots like Tsutsuji-dani (Azalea Valley) and Furimuki-zaka (Turning-back Slope) offer different perspectives of the garden's beauty. Recently, the garden has become famous for its digital art collaborations, where night-time illuminations create a surreal, otherworldly experience different from the daytime.
Each season offers a unique experience. Spring (approx. March–May) is perfect for seeing the explosion of color from cherry blossoms and azaleas. Autumn (approx. October–November) offers a serene atmosphere with the mountains dressed in rich hues. For daytime visitors, the natural colors are striking, while night-time visitors can experience the magical world of light and shadow during special illumination periods. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through the vast grounds, surrounded by seasonal blooms. Walking around the ponds allows for beautiful reflections of the scenery and the imposing presence of Mt. Mifune. You can also relax in the tea houses or traditional Japanese-style rooms to enjoy the view. In recent years, the garden has hosted cutting-edge digital art exhibitions, such as 'teamLab Kami-sama ga Sumau Mori,' blending nature with modern technology. Please note that for landscape preservation, activities like rock climbing or mountain climbing are strictly prohibited.
The area around Mifuneyama Rakuen is rich in culture and relaxation. Nearby, you can find accommodations like the Mifuneyama Kanko Hotel or the Taisho-era inspired 'Kyotoya.' The nearby Takeo Onsen area is also famous for its historic hot springs, making it a perfect destination to combine a garden visit with a relaxing hot spring stay.
The garden is vast and may include unpaved paths or slopes, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. While major events may accept credit cards or transit IC cards, small shops within the area may require cash, so it is wise to carry some JPY. English support and signage are limited outside of major event periods. To protect the landscape, please do not enter restricted areas or attempt to climb the cliffs.
