Michinoku Mori no Kohan National Government Park is a massive 647.4-hectare park located along the shores of Kabusenuma Lake in Kawasaki Town, Miyagi Prefecture. It serves as a vital recreational hub for the Tohoku region. The park is divided into four distinct zones: the North Zone (Health and Greenery), the South Zone (Culture and Water), the Satoyama Zone (Forest and Environment), and the Lakefront Zone. This structure allows visitors to experience a seamless blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The foundation of the park began with the completion of the Kabusenuma Lakeside Park in 1980. This was followed by the launch of the Michinoku Mori no Kohan National Government Park project in 1981. The park opened in stages, with the full scope of the facility being completed in 2014. It has been meticulously developed to preserve the natural environment of Tohoku while providing high-quality recreational facilities. A key feature is the 'Furusato Village,' which preserves the traditional lifestyle and architectural heritage of the Tohoku region.
The park offers diverse areas tailored to different interests. In the South Zone (Culture and Water), you will find 'Furusato Village,' which features relocated and reconstructed traditional houses from various parts of Tohoku, including the Tsugaru region of Aomori, Tono in Iwate, Honjo Y uri in Akita, the foot of Mt. Gassan in Yamagata, Minami-Aizu in Fukushima, and the Naruse River riverside in Miyagi. The area recreates a nostalgic landscape with terraced rice fields, waterwheels, charcoal-making huts, and traditional waterways. Additionally, the vast grounds feature several open plazas such as Toki-no-Hiroba, Sai-no-Hiroba, and Kohan-no-Hiroba, perfect for relaxation.
The park is defined by its stunning seasonal transformations. Visitors can enjoy blooming flowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and serene winter landscapes. Seasonal events are often held throughout the year. While the park is popular with families during the daytime, the scenery along the lake changes beautifully toward the evening. There are numerous ways to engage with nature here. The camping area features 30 cottages, allowing for a comfortable stay even without bringing your own camping gear. For families, there are dedicated areas with playground equipment for children. The Furusato Village offers an educational experience, allowing visitors to learn about the traditional dwellings and lifestyles of the Tohoku region. Whether it is a quiet stroll through the forest or a lively camping trip, the park accommodates various levels of activity.
The park is integrated with the landscape of the Kabusenuma Dam (Kabusenuma Lake), making it a perfect spot for those who enjoy lakeside scenery. The surrounding environment is rich in nature, and the themed zones—Health & Greenery, Culture & Water, and Forest & Environment—encourage visitors to explore the area through different lenses of relaxation and discovery.
