Michi-no-Eki Shirataka Yana Park (also known as Mogami Ayu Utopia) is a roadside station located along Route 287 in Shirataka Town, Yamagata Prefecture, near the scenic Mogami River. The standout feature of this facility is the permanent 'Tourist Yana' installation, which allows visitors to observe the traditional fishing method firsthand. A 'Yana' is a traditional fishing structure designed to catch Ayu (sweetfish) by utilizing the river's natural flow. Here, you can enjoy gourmet dishes featuring fresh Ayu caught in the pristine waters of the Mogami River, alongside a variety of fresh, locally grown agricultural products. It is an ideal destination for travelers looking to experience both regional food culture and natural beauty during a drive.
Shirata Town has a long history of 'Yana' fishing. While several Yana sites existed in the town during the early Showa era, the tradition nearly vanished due to post-war changes. However, driven by a strong desire to preserve and share the taste of Shirataka's Ayu, a dedicated restoration project was launched. Led by Shirataka Kanko Kaihatsu Co., Ltd., a group of approximately 200 local residents worked together to revive the traditional Yana fishing method. Today, the facility serves as a vital hub for preserving local food culture and passing it down to the next generation, attracting visitors from both within the prefecture and across Japan.
The greatest draw is the opportunity to observe the Yana in action, catching sweetfish within the river's current. Witnessing this traditional fishing method, which utilizes the natural topography of the river, is a rare and educational experience. The adjacent 'Ayu Chaya' restaurant serves delicious local specialties. The salt-grilled Ayu (Ayu no Shioyaki) and Tofu Dengaku (grilled tofu with miso) are highly recommended for their ability to highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients. Additionally, during the 'Yana Opening Festival,' you can enjoy a spectacular sight of approximately 150 Koinobori (carp streamers) dancing in the breeze above the Mogami River, offering a quintessential Japanese seasonal landscape.
Michi-no-Eki Shirataka Yana Park offers a different charm in every season. In spring (late April to early May), the Koinobori festival brings a vibrant atmosphere, and you can enjoy the nearby 'Shirataka Sakura Corridor,' a famous spot for cherry blossoms. From summer to autumn, the menu expands with mouthwatering seasonal Ayu dishes. In mid-June, the 'Satsuki Exhibition' is also held by local enthusiasts.
