Metasequoia Namiki is a breathtaking 2.4km avenue located in Makino, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture. The path is lined with approximately 500 Metasequoia trees that stand in perfect order, creating a harmonious landscape with the distant view of Mount Nosaka. This avenue serves as a scenic approach road leading toward the Makino Highlands. Because the scenery changes dramatically with each season, every visit offers a completely different and beautiful experience.
The history of this avenue began with the local fruit producers of Makino. The trees were originally planted as part of a school farm development project titled "Learning from the Soil of Makino." Since then, the local community has carefully nurtured the trees, and the avenue has been extended alongside the development of the prefectural road to reach its current magnificent form. The Metasequoia tree is a deciduous conifer native to China, named for its resemblance to the giant Sequoia.
The greatest charm of this location is the shifting colors of the Metasequoia trees. In spring, the fresh, budding greenery creates a refreshing atmosphere, while in summer, the deep green canopy provides cool shade. Autumn is the most popular season, as the trees turn into a stunning tunnel of gold and orange. In winter, the avenue is often draped in a layer of white snow, offering a mystical and serene landscape.
Spring (April–May): Enjoy the refreshing sight of new green buds.
Summer (June–August): A great time to enjoy the cool shade under the deep green canopy.
Autumn (Mid-November–Early December): The peak season for golden foliage; highly recommended for photographers.
Winter (January–February): Experience the ethereal beauty of the snow-covered trees. To avoid crowds, it is recommended to visit on weekday mornings.
Along the avenue, you can visit "Makino Pick Land Agricultural Park," where you can enjoy seasonal fruit picking. The surrounding area also features various restaurants serving local ingredients and cozy cafes where you can relax while enjoying the view. Whether you are strolling, driving, or enjoying seasonal fruit experiences, you can fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this area.
Nearby attractions include the Makino Highlands and Makino Pick Land Agricultural Park. There are also hot spring facilities (Onsen) in the vicinity, allowing for a relaxing stay amidst nature. While driving is the most convenient way to travel, access via public transportation is also possible.
If visiting in winter, please prepare non-slip footwear for walking on snowy or icy paths. As the avenue passes through residential areas, please drive slowly and be mindful of pedestrians. You may use the parking lots at Makino Pick Land. When taking photographs, please ensure you do not obstruct passing vehicles or other pedestrians.
