Menuma Seitenzan (Kankiin) is a historic temple located in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture. The centerpiece of this site is the Kankiin Seitendo, a building designated as a National Treasure of Japan. The architecture is characterized by an incredibly ornate and colorful style, much like the famous Nikko Toshogu Shrine, featuring intricate carvings and vibrant decorations. As one of the three great Seiten temples in Japan, it has long been a site of deep devotion for those seeking blessings for matchmaking (enmusubi), family safety, and business prosperity.
The main hall, Kankiin Seitendo, was rebuilt in 1760 (the 10th year of the Horeki era). Due to its exquisite decorative architectural style, it holds the prestigious status of a National Treasure. To preserve its beauty against the passage of time and weathering, a massive restoration project known as the "Great Heisei Repair" was conducted over approximately seven years starting in 2003. This restoration successfully brought the temple back to its original, magnificent appearance. Additionally, the grounds house other significant structures, such as the Kiso Mon gate, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
The absolute highlight is the National Treasure, Kankiin Seitendo. The level of detail in the carvings and the richness of the colors represent the pinnacle of traditional Japanese architectural craftsmanship. Visitors can also explore the various legends associated with Seitenzan and the historical background involving the figure Saito Bessho Sanemori. These elements provide a profound window into Japanese spiritual culture and historical architectural styles.
We recommend visiting during the daytime when natural light is strongest. The bright daylight is ideal for observing the intricate details of the carvings and the vivid colors of the architecture, which are reminiscent of the grandeur found at Nikko Toshogu. At Menuma Seitenzan, you can observe traditional Japanese architectural styles up close. The sheer scale and detail of the carvings and colorful decorations offer a sense of awe that photos simply cannot capture. You can also join a scheduled volunteer-led tour to learn about the historical context of the site. Please be aware that the tour times differ between weekdays and weekends/holidays.
The surrounding Kumagaya area preserves much of its local history.
