Located in the center of Tonosho, Shodoshima, the "Maze Town" is a fascinating area characterized by its intricate and winding alleyways. This unique layout is said to have been intentionally designed to protect the island's residents from pirate raids in centuries past. Wandering through these labyrinthine paths offers a unique way to experience the local history and the charm of a traditional Japanese town.
The complex structure of these streets has deep historical roots in defense. During the Nanboku-cho period, when the forces of Sasaki Nobutane of Bizen Kojima were active, the area saw significant military activity. The necessity of defending the settlement led to the creation of these winding paths to confuse invaders, forming the origin of the current maze-like streetscape. Such a defensive urban layout is a rare and precious sight in modern Japan.
The area is dotted with several significant historical buildings and cultural sites. A major landmark is Saiko-ji Temple, the 58th temple of the Shodoshima 88-Temple Pilgrimage. Additionally, the Ozaki Hōsai Memorial Museum, dedicated to the famous poet, offers a deeper look into the cultural richness of the region. These sites serve as wonderful destinations to discover after navigating the winding alleys.
Since the Maze Town consists of public alleys and walking paths, there are no official closing times, allowing you to wander freely at any time. Visiting during daylight hours is highly recommended, as the bright sun makes the intricate structures of the old buildings and the narrow paths much easier to navigate. While the area is enjoyable year-round, please be mindful of the sun and heat during midday strolls.
The best way to experience this area is to intentionally "get lost." Rather than following a strict map, allow yourself to wander the complex paths to stumble upon unexpected views and the fine details of historical architecture. You can easily combine this experience with other famous Shodoshima attractions, such as the narrowest strait in the world (Dobutsu Strait) or the famous Angel Road.
The Maze Town is a perfect addition to any Shodoshima itinerary. For example, it is only about a 15-minute drive from the Nakayama Senmaida rice terraces (selected as one of Japan's top 100 terraced rice fields). You can also easily reach the area via the Shodoshima Olive Bus from Tonosho Port, making it a convenient stop for travelers.
For a comfortable experience, please wear sturdy, walking-friendly shoes, as the paths are narrow and can be uneven. As this is a living residential area, please be respectful of the locals. When taking photos, be mindful of privacy and avoid capturing the interiors of homes or personal living spaces.
