The Meiji Centenary Memorial Observatory Tower is a landmark located at the tip of Cape Futtsu in Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture. Completed in 1971, the tower features a unique architectural design inspired by the Japanese White Pine (Goyomatsu). The observation deck reaches a height of 21.8 meters, providing a spectacular vantage point. Situated within Futtsu Park, the structure blends harmoniously with the surrounding natural environment. It is widely known as a premier spot for viewing the panoramic scenery of Tokyo Bay and has been selected as one of the '100 Best Views of Mt. Fuji in the Kanto Region.'
The area around Cape Futtsu has a rich history; during the Meiji and Taisho eras, it served as a strategic location for coastal defense, featuring facilities such as the First and Second Sea Forts. While the observatory tower itself is a more modern addition completed in 1971, the site maintains a sense of its historical significance as a former defense point. The design, modeled after the Japanese White Pine, serves as a symbol of the local natural beauty.
The greatest draw is the expansive view from the 21.8m high observation deck. Visitors can witness the vast horizon of Tokyo Bay, the coastline of the Boso Peninsula, and the unique topography of the region. On days with high visibility and clear skies, you may even catch a magnificent, clear view of Mount Fuji in the distance. The surrounding landscape is lush with pine trees, creating a beautiful fusion of sea and land.
May, July, and August are considered excellent times to visit. The clarity of the air is particularly important for spotting Mount Fuji. Additionally, the golden hour during sunset offers a magical experience, as the changing light transforms the seascape. Visitors can enjoy different atmospheres depending on the time of day, from the bright midday sun to the soft hues of dusk.
The 360-degree unobstructed view from the deck allows for a complete observation of the surrounding terrain and sea. It is a perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely stroll through Futtsu Park while taking in the changing perspectives from an elevated viewpoint. Depending on the season (specifically between May 1st and August 31st), the adjacent coastal areas may be used for marine leisure activities, such as jet ski zones.
Within Futtsu Park, there are several other facilities to enjoy, including the Nakanoshima Observatory (located on a hill surrounded by a pond), an outdoor theater, and a multi-purpose sports field. The area is well-equipped with parking facilities near the tip of Cape Futtsu, making it easily accessible by car. The entire area is enveloped in rich, tranquil nature.
As the tower is located on a coastal cape, it can become quite windy. We recommend bringing a light jacket or clothing suitable for coastal weather. For those traveling by car, please use the Futtsu Park No. 3 Parking Lot. Note that there may be restrictions on large buses, so please check in advance. Please respect local rules regarding vehicle access to the beach and the protection of natural monuments.
