The Meguro Parasitological Museum is a highly rare research institution specializing in parasitology, located in Meguro, Tokyo. The exhibition space, spanning the first and second floors, houses approximately 300 liquid-preserved specimens and related materials collected from both Japan and abroad. This facility offers a profound way to learn about the diversity of parasites from a medical perspective, providing intellectual stimulation to visitors from all over the world.
Founded in 1953 by Dr. Ryo Kameya, the museum preserves many precious materials that illustrate the history of medicine and hygiene education. For instance, the exquisite wax models once used in medical training serve as vital historical documents for both medical and cultural history. Today, the museum also focuses on the digitalization of its archives and promoting cultural tourism through collaboration with local communities and other institutions.

This floor focuses on parasites that affect human health. A particularly notable feature is the collection of enlarged wax models, said to be crafted by Jinichi Numata. These models are precious historical artifacts that supported medical education; many were produced following the acquisition of technical expertise from Germany. Currently, the museum is also working on digital initiatives, such as making parts of these precious works available as 3D models.
The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. While the permanent collection remains constant, the museum occasionally hosts "Special Exhibitions," such as those themed around marine life. An average visit takes about 30 to 40 minutes, making it an efficient stop during an afternoon of sightseeing. Please note that the final exit is at 5:00 PM, so we recommend arriving with plenty of time to spare.
Visitors can engage deeply with the specialized field of parasitology through quiet observation. The museum also sells official guidebooks (available in both Japanese and English) and the periodic publication "Mushi-mushi Domohara no Mushi Tsushin." These are excellent resources for those wishing to deepen their understanding of the exhibits and the world of parasites.
