Matsusaka Castle Ruins (Matsusaka Park) is a significant historical site located in Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture. Originally built as a flatland castle in 1588 by the famous daimyo Gamō Ujisato, the site is now a designated National Historic Site. While the original castle buildings were lost to fires and demolition during the Meiji era, the impressive stone walls and the castle platform remain. Today, the site is maintained as a beautiful park and serves as a central landmark for the local community, offering a peaceful way to experience Japan's feudal history.
The area has been inhabited since ancient times, with archaeological evidence such as Jomon pottery found nearby. Following Gamō Ujisato's entry into Ise Province in 1584, he began constructing the current castle site in Shigo-morimori in 1588. The development of the castle led to the growth of a prosperous merchant town. During the Edo period, it served as the seat of the Matsusaka Domain and later as a strategic political and military outpost for the Kii Clan. After the Meiji Restoration and various fires, the site was preserved as a historical monument centered around its stone walls.
The most striking feature is the massive stone walls (ishigaki). The walls primarily utilize the 'no-zura-zumi' method, using natural stones to create a rugged, historic appearance. From the castle grounds, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding town, providing a glimpse into the urban structure of the former castle town. In the Ninomaru area, you can also find historical remains and literary monuments that add cultural depth to your visit.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. Visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring, wisteria in early summer, and vibrant ginkgo trees in autumn. These seasonal colors harmonize perfectly with the ancient stone walls. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate stone structures and the surrounding cityscape under bright, natural light.
As the site is an open public park, visitors are free to stroll through the grounds and observe the historical remains. You can walk along the paths to trace the layout of the former fortifications and study the unique shapes of the stone walls. The environment is well-maintained, making it an enjoyable space for a relaxing walk that blends history with nature.
The area surrounding the castle ruins is rich with local history. Beyond the park, you will find public facilities like the city hall and hospitals, as well as traces of the former castle town, including the sites of former samurai residences and guardhouses, allowing for a deeper exploration of Matsusaka's heritage.
For a comfortable visit, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. While the park paths are generally well-maintained, please watch your step near the stone walls where the terrain may be uneven. There is no admission fee to enter the park. While the park is free, please carry cash if you plan to use nearby shops or facilities. English-language information may be available at local tourist information centers. Photography is permitted, but please respect the site as a historical monument.
