The Matsushima Air Base Air Show is a special event held at Matsushima Air Base in Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture. This air show offers a rare opportunity to witness the high-performance demonstration flights by the JASDF 11th Flying Squadron, alongside various aircraft and equipment displays. As the largest event in Higashimatsushima, it attracts aviation enthusiasts from all over. The most striking feature is the ability to observe the dynamic movements of aircraft and advanced aviation technology from a very close distance.
Matsushima Air Base is a vital facility housing the 4th Air Wing of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The base has a storied history; it once functioned as an airfield for the Imperial Japanese Navy and experienced air raids during wartime. Following the war, the site underwent a period of transition and, in 1954, the security forces were organized, eventually developing into the modern JASDF hub it is today. Although the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake temporarily impacted the base's functions, it has since fully recovered. Today, the base continues to host events like this air show, playing a crucial role in Japan's aerial security while remaining deeply connected to the local community's recovery and history.
The absolute highlight of this event is the formation flight by the demonstration team. The dynamic maneuvers of the aircraft in the sky offer a sense of scale and power that cannot be fully captured from the ground. Another major draw is the static display area, where you can inspect aircraft such as the F-2B operated by the 21st Flying Squadron up close. The air show is typically held in August. Since it takes place during the peak of summer, please be prepared for high temperatures and humidity. Events often start early in the morning, so we recommend planning your day around the flight demonstration schedule. Please note that during the air show, parking at the base is generally not available for the public. We highly recommend using public transportation, such as the JR Senseki Line to JR Yamoto Station, to access the venue.
When using local shops or public transport near the venue, we strongly recommend carrying cash. While some facilities may accept credit cards or electronic money, cash is the most reliable way to pay for local services and small vendors.
Information at the base and surrounding areas is primarily provided in Japanese. English signage and staff support may be limited. We recommend downloading a translation app or preparing basic English phrases to ensure a smooth experience.

Since the event is held in August, heatstroke prevention is vital. Please bring a hat, a sun umbrella, plenty of water, and wear comfortable, breathable clothing. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for moving around the site.
Photography of the flight demonstrations and aircraft displays is generally allowed, but please strictly follow the instructions of the staff regarding restricted areas and prohibited zones within the base.
While the base facilities are well-maintained, the event can be very crowded, which may make movement difficult. If you require wheelchair access, we recommend checking the official guidance in advance.
The base is a military facility. Please maintain respectful behavior and strictly adhere to all signs. Do not touch the displayed aircraft or enter any restricted areas.
