On the other hand, Nawate-dori is a unique and friendly shopping street characterized by its adorable frog motifs found throughout the area. These districts are more than just shopping zones; they serve as living museums where you can truly feel the history and culture of Matsumoto.
These areas developed as part of the castle town surrounding Matsumoto Castle. The vicinity of Nakamachi-dori retains many historical structures that preserve the local culture to this day. Nawate-dori also possesses a historical connection to the castle's outer moat and has modernly embraced a 'frog' theme. The frog symbol is deeply rooted in the community through events like the 'Kaeru Matsuri' (Frog Festival), which are organized through the cooperation of local residents, students, and citizens.
On Nakamachi-dori, you will find a variety of traditional craft shops, charming eateries, and specialty stores. The shops utilizing the historic kura-style architecture offer a stunning glimpse into traditional Japanese architectural beauty. In Nawate-dori, the charm lies in the playful frog decorations and the friendly atmosphere of the local shops. While daytime is perfect for photographing the beautiful historic buildings, visiting at dusk allows you to enjoy a more atmospheric scenery as the street lamps begin to glow.

The National Treasure Matsumoto Castle is within walking distance, allowing you to pair your stroll with a visit to the castle. The Matsumoto City Museum and the Matsumoto City Clock Museum are also nearby for a deeper dive into local history.
