The Hekirichi Bastion Fort of the Matsumae Clan (Hekirichi Jinya) is a historic site located in Nozaki, Hokuto City, Hokkaido. It is renowned for being a highly distinctive fortification that adopted the star fort (bastion) design based on European military theories of the 19th century. This site serves as a crucial piece of evidence showing the evolution of Japanese fortification technology. Today, it is maintained as a historical park, where visitors can walk through a vast landscape that still retains the traces of its original defensive structures.
The area was originally called "Hekirichi," derived from the Ainu word "peker-pet," meaning "beautiful or bright river." During the turbulent end of the Edo period, specifically during the Battle of Hakodate, this site faced the waves of history. Records indicate that in 1868, during the conflict involving the retreating forces of the Shogunate, the garrison abandoned the fort and it was burned down after the troops moved to reinforce Goryokaku. In the Meiji era, the land became the property of the wealthy Iwafune family. In 1965, the main star fort site and parts of the outer fortifications were officially designated as a National Historic Site.
The most striking feature is the star-shaped bastion structure. The vast grounds still reveal how the terrain was utilized according to the military theories of the time. The designated historical area covers a total of 104,206 square meters, including the main star fort (43,400 m²) and the rear gunpowder magazine site (2,213 m²). By walking through the park and observing the topography, visitors can visually grasp the layout and strategic placement of this historical defensive stronghold.
You can enjoy the changing scenery of the four seasons alongside the historical landscape. In spring, the cherry blossom trees—planted by former owners of the land—add a beautiful touch to the view. The expansive park is perfect for a leisurely stroll regardless of the season.
