Matsugaoka Park is a landmark of Iwaki City, Fukushima, and was the first major park developed in the city. Established in 1907 (Meiji 40) as a memorial project following the Russo-Japanese War, the area was originally composed of tea plantations, wheat fields, and bamboo groves. It was later developed around a large reservoir used for fire prevention, and with the planting of cherry blossoms, plum trees, and azaleas, it evolved into the scenic landscape seen today. It is a space deeply rooted in the local community, where history and nature exist in perfect harmony.
The history of this park dates back to the Meiji era. The construction was initiated by the local council of the time as a commemorative project. Within the park, you can find significant historical remains, such as the bronze statue of Ando Tsushima-no-kami, a prominent figure in the diplomacy of the late Edo period, and the Amada Goan residence.
