Matsue Jinja is a historic shrine located in the Ninomaru area of Matsue Castle in Shimane Prefecture. It is renowned as the site where the "Kito-fuda" (prayer tablets) were discovered, which played a decisive role when Matsue Castle was designated as a National Treasure. The shrine enshrines figures such as Tokugawa Ieyasu and the lords of the Matsue Clan, offering blessings for business prosperity, protection against misfortune, and traffic safety. Furthermore, the rain that falls in Matsue is poetically called "Enishizuku" (Drops of Connection/Fate), symbolizing a blessing that brings people together. The history of this shrine dates back to 1877, when it was originally founded as "Rakusan Jinja" by the enthusiasts of the former Matsue Clan. Initially, it enshrined Matsudaira Masamasa in Nishikata Village, located in the outskirts of present-day Matsue. In 1898, the divine spirit of Toshogu (founded in 1628) was enshrined here, and in 1899, the shrine was relocated to its current position in the Ninomaru area of Matsue Castle, at which point the name was changed to "Matsue Jinja." The shrine honors significant figures in the history of the Matsue Clan, including Horio Yoshiharu, Matsudaira Masamasa, Matsudaira Harutomo, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
The greatest architectural highlight is the Haiden (worship hall) built in the "Gongen-zukuri" style, which was popular during the Edo period. This style features a unique structure where the Honden (main sanctuary) and Haiden are connected by a space called the "Ishi-no-ma." The main sanctuary itself is a historic building dating back to 1628. Additionally, the heart-shaped ema are a beloved attraction for those praying for luck in love and matchmaking.
