The Matsue History Museum is a historical museum dedicated to the castle town culture of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. Matsue is a historic settlement that has flourished for 400 years along the shores of Lake Shinji. The museum offers a multi-faceted look at the lives of its people, the industries that supported the Matsue Clan, the refined culture of the samurai, and the profound spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony. From historical documents to everyday household items, the exhibits invite visitors to step back in time to the Edo period and beyond.
The development of Matsue has always centered around Matsue Castle. The history of the castle, completed around 1611, is the very identity of this region. A key highlight is the "Matsue Castle Tenshu Kito-fuda" (National Treasure), a prayer tablet discovered in a pillar of the castle's basement, which serves as vital evidence of the castle's construction period. The museum also explores the unique intersection of politics and culture through the legacies of the Matsue Clan lords and the refined aesthetic of the famous tea master, Matsudaira Fumai.
