Matsue Castle is a designated National Treasure located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. As one of only 12 original castle keeps remaining in Japan, it is renowned for its distinctive appearance, characterized by the beautiful contrast between its black-lacquered plaster and white walls. The castle tower, rising majestically above massive stone walls, serves as a vital architectural testament to the Edo period.
Constructed during the Edo period, the castle tower was officially designated as a National Treasure in 2015. It has long served as a historical stronghold for the region. The surrounding area is rich in culture, featuring facilities like the Matsue Historical Museum, which helps preserve and showcase the local heritage.
The centerpiece of Matsue Castle is its National Treasure castle tower. Inside, visitors can observe the authentic architectural structures used by samurai and builders of the era. The visual strikingness of the black walls against the white elements and the heavy stone foundations provides a unique aesthetic experience. Climbing the tower allows you to witness the advanced engineering and structural design of traditional Japanese fortifications firsthand.
The scenery of Matsue Castle changes beautifully with the seasons. The castle tower's entrance hours are 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM from April to September, and 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM from October to March. The Honmaru area (inner grounds) opens from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM (April–September) and 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM (October–March). Visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms in the spring and the changing light of summer and autumn against the dark walls.
By entering the castle tower, you can experience the interior of a traditional Japanese fortress. Please note that upon entering the tower, you must remove your shoes and place them in a provided shoe bag. Beyond the castle, you can explore the surrounding historical environment, including the Matsue Historical Museum and the popular Horikawa Sightseeing Boat, which offers a unique way to view the castle from the water.
The area around Matsue Castle is dotted with historical sites. The Matsue Historical Museum offers excellent exhibits on local history, making it a perfect companion visit to the castle. Additionally, the Horikawa Sightseeing Boat allows you to view the castle walls from the water, providing a different perspective. The area is also closely linked to the legacy of the famous writer Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo).
When entering the castle tower, you are required to remove your shoes and carry them in a shoe bag. We recommend wearing easy-to-remove shoes and bringing socks for comfort. Since the interior features steep stairs and uneven surfaces, comfortable clothing and footwear are highly recommended.
