Matabee Sakura (also known as Hongo no Takizakura) is a magnificent single weeping cherry tree (shidarezakura) located in Ouda Hongo, Uda City, Nara Prefecture. With an estimated age of 300 years, the tree stands over 13 meters tall with a trunk circumference exceeding 3 meters. Its massive branches spread wide, adorned with delicate pale pink blossoms in spring, creating a presence that captivates all who visit.
The tree is named after the legend of the Sengoku period warlord, Goto Matabee (Goto Motoji). It is said that after the fall of the Toyotomi clan, Motoji lived in the area of present-day Ouda, Uda City. The tree stands on the site of the former Goto family residence, making it more than just a natural wonder; it is a site preserved as a piece of local history. The tree gained even wider recognition after being featured in the opening sequence of the NHK Taiga Drama 'Aoi Tokugawa San-dai' in 2000.
The most striking feature is the overwhelming scale of the weeping cherry tree. As the branches cascade toward the ground, they create a shape reminiscent of a waterfall (hence the name 'Takizakura' or 'Waterfall Cherry'). During the peak blooming season, the dense clusters of pale pink flowers are a sight to behold. Additionally, during the 'Sakura Festival' held around the blooming period, nighttime illuminations are conducted. The sight of the illuminated blossoms emerging from the darkness offers a completely different, ethereal visual experience compared to daytime.
The best time to see the blossoms is typically from late March to early April. During this window, the pale pink flowers reach full bloom. If you visit during the evening, you can experience the special nighttime illuminations.
