Masumizu Kogen is a highland area characterized by gentle rolling hills located on the western foot of Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture. By using the Tenku Lift, visitors can ascend to a higher altitude to enjoy a bird's-eye view of the surrounding natural landscape. From the summit area, a vast panorama unfolds, stretching across the Sea of Japan, the Yumigahama Peninsula, and even the Shimane Peninsula. The area is famous for its changing seasonal scenery, with diverse plant life and topographical features.
This area has long been intertwined with the natural beauty of Mt. Daisen. The facilities that served as ski lifts during the winter are operated as the "Tenku Lift" from summer to autumn, showcasing how leisure activities adapt to the seasons. Furthermore, the area preserves a cultural connection to nature, with historical routes leading toward Daiji-ji Temple and the presence of ancient, lush beech forests that have coexisted with the local community for generations.
One of the most captivating experiences is the "aerial stroll" via the Tenku Lift. The ride takes approximately 8 minutes one way, allowing you to watch the horizon expand as you ascend the highland slope. Once you reach the summit, the unobstructed view provides a magnificent sight of distant coastlines and islands. Additionally, the scenery surrounding Ichinozawa, Ninozawa, and the Sannozawa area—renowned for its magnificent beech forests—offers a unique landscape found only in this region.
The Tenku Lift is operational from spring through autumn (April to November), making it an ideal time to view the highland scenery from above. The landscape is particularly lush and green from May to September. In contrast, the area is primarily used for skiing during the winter months. For the best experience, visit during the daytime when visibility is highest and the sky is clearest for panoramic viewing.
After ascending the slope via the Tenku Lift, visitors can enjoy hiking along the "Yokote-michi" path toward the Mt. Daisen area. This trail leads through a serene beech forest, offering a wonderful opportunity to observe the forest ecosystem. The route connecting Ichinozawa to Sannozawa is part of a larger trekking network that allows you to explore the edges of Mt. Daisen at your own pace.
Around Masumizu Kogen, you will find various attractions such as the Daisen Kogen Resort and Daisen Makiba (pasture), as well as other scenic spots often referred to as the "Tenku" (Sky) area. The area is well-connected to hiking routes leading toward Daiji-ji Temple, providing a perfect environment for continuous nature walks.
As this is a highland area, weather conditions can change rapidly. It is highly recommended to bring clothing suitable for temperature fluctuations and to prepare for wind while using the lift. For hiking, sturdy walking shoes are essential.
