Maruyama Park is one of the oldest and most historic parks in Kyoto. Designated as a national place of scenic beauty, the park is a harmonious blend of lush nature and historical architecture. Historically, the area was also known for its medicinal hot springs and social gathering spots. The most iconic sight in Maruyama Park is the central 'Gion Shidare-zakura.' This specific variety of weeping cherry tree is spectacularly illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere for 'yozakura' (night cherry blossom viewing). Maruyama Park is located right next to Gion, one of Kyoto's most iconic districts. The surrounding area is home to famous landmarks like Yasaka Shrine and Chion-in Temple, as well as numerous restaurants and traditional shops. It is very convenient to visit the park for a stroll and then head into the Gion streets for a meal or to explore the historic neighborhood.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the grounds. Please bring clothing suitable for the temperature, especially if visiting during evening illuminations when it can get chilly. As this is a public space, please be mindful of noise and litter.
