Marugami Falls is located at the foot of Mount Ryogami in Ogano Town, Chichibu District, Saitama Prefecture. Its most striking feature is its dynamic three-tiered structure. With a total drop of approximately 76 meters, it holds significant historical value as the only waterfall in Saitama Prefecture to be selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls." The beauty of this landscape was even recorded in the late Edo-period document Shinpen Musashi Fudoki-ko, proving its long-standing appeal. Nestled within the rich natural environment of Mount Ryogami, the falls create a unique landscape shaped by the surrounding topography.
The area's scenic beauty has been documented for centuries, appearing in the Shinpen Musashi Fudoki-ko (compiled during the Bunsei era, 1804–1830). Furthermore, Mount Ryogami behind the falls has long been known as a sacred site for mountain worship. During the Edo period, it served as a holy site for Shugendo (ascetic training), attracting many practitioners from across the country. From a geological perspective, the site is also highly significant as a geosite, offering a window into the natural processes and geological formation of the region.
The waterfall consists of three distinct tiers, each offering a different expression. The first tier drops 12m, the second 14m, and the third tier—the most spectacular part—features a massive 50m drop. The backdrop of Mount Ryogami is composed of a massive radiolarite (chert) rock body. This chert, containing fossils from the Paleozoic to Mesozoic eras, is highly resistant to erosion, which has resulted in the mountain's distinctive, saw-toothed silhouette. The harmony between the geological structure and the waterfall makes this a truly unique destination.
You can enjoy different aspects of Marugami Falls throughout the year. From spring to summer, the lush greenery deepens, and the increased water volume creates a powerful, dynamic display. In autumn, the surrounding foliage adds vibrant colors to the scene, while winter offers a sense of serene, quiet nature. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the texture of the rock faces and the scale of the waterfall.
The area offers a wonderful opportunity for geotourism. Visitors can explore the geological history of the earth through the lens of the Chert rock bodies and the steep terrain formed by tectonic movements. Walking near the Komori River allows you to feel the raw energy of nature. It is an ideal spot for those interested in field research or simply observing how geology shapes the landscape.
There are several interesting spots near the falls. Nearby, you can observe the natural environment of the Dojo no Setsubunso (Japanese Adonis) habitat. Mount Ryogami is also recognized as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, making it a popular hub for hikers and climbers. After your exploration, you can relax at nearby facilities such as the Ryogami Onsen Yakushino-yu to soothe your muscles.
Because the terrain is natural and can be uneven or steep, sturdy walking shoes and practical clothing are highly recommended. Please be prepared for sudden changes in weather.
