Makunbetsu Wetland is a 130-hectare low-lying wetland located in the meandering section of the downstream Ishikari River in Ishikari, Hokkaido. The area is primarily composed of two distinct zones: an alder forest and an area of reed beds. This rich natural environment offers a peaceful escape where visitors can observe the changing seasonal landscapes while listening to the diverse songs of wild birds. The arrival of spring brings a vibrant transformation to the scenery, marked by the emergence of unique flora and a thriving ecosystem.
The Makunbetsu Wetland preserves a pristine natural environment situated between the mouth of the Ishikari River and the Shunkonbetsu River in the lower reaches of the Ibaro River. For many years, this area has been maintained as a site for nature conservation and ecological observation. The wetland was formed by the natural meanders of the Ishikari River, making it a symbolic landscape of Hokkaido's rich natural heritage. The site is equipped with well-maintained walking paths and boardwalks, allowing visitors to feel a close connection to the wilderness without disturbing the delicate environment.
The most spectacular feature of this wetland is the massive colony of Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho). Starting in mid-April, the flowers begin to bloom sequentially, creating one of the most impressive displays of Skunk Cabbage in Hokkaido. The blooming season typically concludes around early May. Visitors can also enjoy the scenic view of the Ishikari River Mouth Bridge and observe various plants and wild birds from the safety of the wooden boardwalks. The shifting textures of the alder forests and reed beds provide a constantly changing and beautiful backdrop.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. The period from mid-April to early May is particularly special, as the wetland becomes blanketed in white Skunk Cabbage flowers, showcasing the powerful vitality of spring. This is also an excellent time for birdwatching as avian activity increases. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to stroll along the boardwalks and enjoy the harmonious view of the Ishikari River flowing through the wetland.
A well-maintained wooden boardwalk, approximately 400 meters long and 1 meter wide, allows for easy nature observation. The path leads toward the banks of the Ishikari River, offering a clear view of the Ishikari River Mouth Bridge. It is a perfect spot for mindful walking, listening to the sounds of nature, and observing the delicate Skunk Cabbage and local bird species in a serene setting.
Located near the mouth of the Ishikari River, the wetland is a prominent landmark near the Ishikari River Mouth Bridge. The surrounding area includes recreational facilities such as the Sapporo Bay Golf Club. As a scenic part of the Hokkaido landscape, it is easily accessible by car and can be a relaxing stop on a driving route through the Ishikari region.
