Makiba no Sakura, located in Hosono, Kobayashi City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is one of the premier cherry blossom destinations in Southern Kyushu. Approximately 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees line the road, creating a spectacular "cherry blossom tunnel" where the branches arch gracefully toward the center. The view is framed by the magnificent peaks of Mount Ikomofuji and the Kirishima mountain range, offering a landscape where history and nature harmonize perfectly. Historically known as the "Gunma no Sakura" (Warhorse Cherry Blossoms), this site has long fascinated visitors with its unique heritage.
The history of this site dates back to 1908, with the establishment of the Kobayashi Branch of the National Horse Breeding Station. The cherry trees were originally planted to honor the military horses of that era, marking the beginning of this beautiful landscape. During the early Showa era, the 2-kilometer stretch of cherry trees was opened to the public and became famous throughout Kyushu as the "Gunma no Sakura." At its peak, the area was so popular that the Moji Railway even operated special sightseeing trains to bring visitors, with crowds reaching up to 400,000 people. While the name eventually changed to "Makiba no Sakura" (Farm Cherry Blossoms) and the festivals faced periods of hiatus, a revitalization effort led by the city and local citizens has successfully restored the beauty of the blossoms since 1988.
The most striking feature is the 2-kilometer-long path of Yoshino cherry trees. At full bloom, the density of the flowers is so great that they seem to hide the sky, creating a vivid pink tunnel. The contrast between the pink blossoms and the grand Kirishima mountain range provides a view found nowhere else. During certain seasons, the trees are illuminated at night, offering a mystical and dreamy atmosphere that differs greatly from the daytime scenery.
The best time to visit is during the full bloom period from March to April. During the day, you can enjoy a stroll under the bright sunlight through the vibrant pink canopy. For a truly unforgettable experience, we highly recommend visiting during the night illuminations. If you visit during the Cherry Blossom Festival, you can also witness spectacular fireworks lighting up the night sky.
During the annual "Makiba no Sakura Festival" in spring, various events are held. The "Sakura Ichiba" (Cherry Blossom Market) features stalls selling local specialties and street food, allowing you to taste the flavors of Miyazaki. Additionally, special stages host performances such as local children's dances, Japanese drum (Taiko) performances, brass band music, and traditional dances, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture in a natural setting.
The area is characterized by a historical atmosphere related to agriculture and livestock, with facilities like the Livestock Improvement Center nearby. The surrounding roads also serve as beautiful driving routes with views of the Kirishima mountain range, making for a scenic journey through nature.
