Located in the southern part of Niimi City, Okayama Prefecture, Maki Cave is a stunning horizontal limestone cave formed over countless years by the erosion of rainwater and groundwater. Designated as a natural monument of Okayama Prefecture, its natural formations are truly awe-inspiring.
The greatest draw of Maki Cave is the "dreamlike atmosphere" created by the colorful LED lighting that illuminates the interior. As you walk along the 450-meter path, the light colors shift every few seconds, giving the same location a completely different expression. This contrast of light and shadow transports visitors into an extraordinary, otherworldly space. Additionally, the temperature inside remains around 15°C year-round, making it a refreshing escape in the summer and a pleasantly warm sanctuary in the winter.
The history of Maki Cave is said to date back to the late Edo period, when a hunter discovered the cave while chasing a raccoon dog. Later, in the early Showa era, the famous poet duo Tekkan and Akiko Yosano visited the site. They were so moved by its mysterious beauty that they praised it as a "cave filled with wonders," which eventually led to its current name.
Culturally, the cave is also known as a filming location for various films and dramas. It served as a setting for the mystery series featuring Kosuke Kindaichi, making it a popular spot for fans of the genre. More recently, the cave has connected with modern pop culture, with its ambient sounds being used in the popular RPG "Granblue Fantasy: Relink."

First, don't miss the "Lovers' Spring" located deep inside the cave. Because the entrance shape resembles a heart, it has been designated as a "Lovers' Sanctuary," making it a highly popular destination for couples and girls' trips. The reflection of the stalactites and lights on the water surface is incredibly photogenic and a favorite for social media enthusiasts.
Next is the "Colorful Illumination." The LED lighting brings out the intricate textures of the stalactites in vivid detail.
